Dr Yusuf Maina-Bukar

Director General/CEO

Yusuf Maina-Bukar, Ph.D. is the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) Nigeria. He holds a Doctorate Degree (PhD) from University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, on “the Impact of the Emerging Climate Change Risks on Sustainable Urban Growth”. He also holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree in “Advanced Sustainability of the Built Environment” from the University of Dundee, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning (B. URP) from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria.

Dr. Yusuf is an experienced, competent and well-trained professional in the fields relating to Climate Change Adaptation, Sustainable Urban Growth and Environmental Impact Assessment. Prior to his appointment as the DG/CEO of NAGGW, Dr. Yusuf was a Deputy Director at Desert Research, Monitoring and Control Centre (DRMCC), at Yobe State University Damaturu, where he coordinated the partnership that led to the establishment of Shelterbelts and Woodlots in Yobe State amongst other projects.

Apart from academic and scholarly activities as a Senior Lecturer at Yobe State University, Dr. Yusuf led the Department of Geography to achieve full accreditation while acting as the Head of Department. He also spearheaded several initiatives as a member, board of postgraduate studies and improvement committee of the same University.

Dr. Yusuf has worked on several development projects targeted at adapting and mitigating the impacts of emerging climate change risks on diverse economic and growth activities. He has published/contributed scholarly resources and presented in various international conferences and workshops, and served as a panelist in various fora. These giant strides have taken Dr. Yusuf to countries like; United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, France, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Spain, India, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal & Niger Republic amongst others, in order to share his experiences and foster collaboration in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation through sustainable means.

As a Member of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Dr. Yusuf has received professional trainings from the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in London, United Kingdom, amongst other reputable professional organizations in the course of his career. Dr. Yusuf is happily married with children and enjoys landscaping, planting trees, and ecotourism.
